ENDGAME – VARIS WRX STI

SUBARU LOVE AFFAIR

Quite often, from an early age, we start to grow passion and imagination towards certain things. For many of our readers, it’s cars.

At the same time, we start to build love affairs with certain styles of tuning and become favourable towards particular makes and models of cars.

This scenario rings true to the owner of our latest feature car, who has owned a number of cars but has always had a ‘thing’ for Subaru’s and their well-known ‘boxer rumble’ engines.

Enter the world of Mike from Australia’s capital city of Canberra and his Transformer looking WRX STI Premium – which started its life in Mike’s hands in completely stock form.

A MODERN INTERPRETATION

Mike’s very first Subaru was a 2002 Bugeye which he quickly began to modify in cue with styling from that era – from custom airbrushing work, a huge stereo system and 20″ chrome wheels, it had it all.

In line with car shows at that time, attending and showcasing at events only fueled Mike’s passion even more. He knew he wanted to modify from an early age, but he also had a clear goal.

From then and reflected in his build today, he’s always wanted to go for a show car look first and admits in the most humble way that there’s no problem with going for a hard-parked vibe.

Being influenced by Australia’s show and magazine era of AutoSalon, Mike’s car is a modern-day interpretation of a car that would be on exhibit, if the show was still around today. Quality and genuine parts adorn the car inside out and influence was carried forward from modern time attack cars.

“I REALLY JUST WANTED TO BUILD MY OWN VERSION OF WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE THE ENDGAME VERSION OF THIS CAR, WHICH IS STILL FAR FROM OVER.”

PIECING IT TOGETHER

Building the complete package was a four-year process and a key component of the build comprised of the first and only genuine VARIS VAB widebody kit in Australia. It’s a full catalogue build that comprises of 15 VARIS parts alone.

Mike incorporated carbon fibre options throughout and resprayed the whole car with a two-tone paint job – Subaru WR Blue Pearl as a base and a Gunmetal Grey to contrast, which was sampled from Nissan’s R32 GT-R.

To complement the widebody kit, the car is sitting on Work Meister S1 3-Piece wheels and suspension is handled by an Air Lift Performance airbag system – which has been mounted in the boot with custom polished wood liner.

Wanting to build the car as show and go, it also has mild performance upgrades, with a focus on torque gains throughout the power band rather than large power.

Notable upgrades include a change in the fuel system for flex fuel and removal of factory airflow restrictions. The car puts out 257HP / 192kW at 588Nm on 98 pump and 295HP / 220kW at 665Nm on E85.

PLANNING AND LEARNINGS

Wanting to build a complete package; research, sharing and insights from the car community helped shape the inspiration and vision for Mike’s build.

The 15-piece VARIS kit, for example, took about one year to come into fruition. Before pulling the trigger, Mike wanted to learn about the design of the kit and plan out the rest of the car.

Admittedly, Mike notes that he would “go full send on the widebody straight up if i did this car again”, making note of modifying the narrow body, before pulling it all apart shortly after for the widebody.

“I feel I could have saved a lot of time and money not only in the cost of the changes with the body kits, paint and labour, but also things like the wider wheels and other add-ons that I needed to replace for the widebody to suit the new look. These funds could have taken the car a lot further”, admits Mike.

NEXT STEPS

With the COVID-19 virus and lockdowns currently in full effect, Mike admits that the car is already back at the shop getting more modifications done.

Upcoming changes include a new trunk setup with hard lines, interior changes and attention to the engine bay along with a focus on power gains to get the car to the next level. It’ll be back for 2021 show season.

Mike would like to thank everyone who helped him over the years with the build. This includes Auto Elements, JDM Accessories, CT Autoparts, Ichiban Imports, TechWorkz Automotive, Prowraps and Graphics, In-House Autoworks, Hot Import Nights Australia, Vaded Mob and Rarest Rose.

“THE CAR IS ALREADY BACK IN THE SHOP GETTING MORE MODIFICATION WORK DONE – IT’LL BE READY FOR NEXT YEAR’S SHOW SEASON.”
