THE-LOWDOWN Feature Car – KLR32R

A MASTERCLASS IN BUILDING A STREET MONSTER

There’s no contesting that Nissan’s GT-R platform has risen to stardom in the last two decades. But even before the hype train and price appreciation, the GT-R badge has been mesmerising enthusiasts since the ’90s.

Part of this could be attributed to the infamy of Bathurst and the car being blocked from competing in 1993. This was after it took out podium wins in 1991 and 1992, gaining its nickname Godzilla thereafter.

Desirablity grew even further after the R34 GT-R appeared in The Fast and The Furious franchise and was represented by the late Paul Walker.

Simple supply and demand has seen the car skyrocket in popularity and price, but the story of this GT-R isn’t about it being a commodity, it’s one of passion, precision and execution.

Setting The Bar High

The owner of this R32 GT-R, Marijan, has owned it for over 16 years but his desire to build one started well before that, simply after being mesmerised by pulling up next to one at a set of lights.

From that day, he began researching engine packages and learned everything he could about the car and its all wheel drive system.

The list began to form, and coupling his mechanical background with a love of cars, he set out to build a car that was capable of 1000HP at the flywheel.

With a keen eye for detail, ownership secured and a vision of blending a tough car with street driveability, the long journey began from ground up.

Colour Coordination Was a Real Struggle

Building the car from ground up was, as to be expected, no easy task.

Marijan recalls, “There were hundreds of hurdles to overcome during the build, but the hardest of all was colour combination, from the wheels to brakes, engine bay and of course, interior.”

To get the car up to where you see it today and where Marijan would be happy with it, it actually went through two complete overhauls.

After initially building the car first time around, the vision only grew larger, so Marijan took the car off the road again to change the look of the car and to colour match as many components as he could.

It’s All In The Details

One look at the featured imagery and the first thing you’ll notice is the Jet Black paint coupled with gold hardware. Take a closer inspection of our feature video though and the attention to detail becomes more apparent.

For starters, N1 side skirts were customised and fitted, accompanied by a custom front lip spoiler. With the addition of period correct ganador side mirrors and Blitz 19″ Technospeed wheels, the outside began to take form.

On the inside, R34 GT-R V-Spec II seats were sourced and the rear seats were deleted with a custom carbon shelf taking its place. A HKS roll cage and custom fab harness bar was added in addition to a Nismo steering wheel and gear knob for driver interaction use.

Peep inside the engine bay and you’ll find some big ticket items including a Nitto 2.8L stroker kit, Garret GT45 turbo and a TRUST drag intercooler; to name a few.

“I’m at an end of road Scenario, where I’m happy and content with the car.”

When asked about the future, Marijan acknowledges that he has reached a point where he is happy with the car but teases, “No car is ever finished, so yeah, i will continue to modify it…”

He also thanks his good friend Alex from Birrong Automotive, noting that the car and build has been a rollercoaster ride over the past 16 years.

Lessons learnt include having fun along the way and sticking it out no matter how hard it may get or how little progress may feel at times.
