THE-LOWDOWN Feature Car – OHLAWD Mazda RX-7

IT STARTED WITH A VISION

Often complimented for its sleek looks and timeless profile, Mazda’s third generation RX-7 was truly ahead of the curve. Coupled with its infamous rotary engine, the FD3S chassis grew to be one of Mazda’s most iconic performance models of all time.

It comes as no surprise then, that the FD platform was and still is a popular choice amongst car enthusiasts. Case in point is Adam, the owner of this Triple Black example.

For Adam, aspirations to own an RX7 started about 13 years ago and ownership grew into fruition 10 years go when he sold his MR2 SW20 to move to the FD3S platform. From the onset he obsessed over parts, aero and styling—endlessly researching every option for each upgrade during the golden era of the forum.

Referencing influential builds (think DCUPS, RAS13B etc.) and selecting tastefully, carefully curated parts, the car began to evolve into what it is today.

Adam admits he wasn’t Rotary obsessed, he just knew he’d fallen in love with the shape and road presence of the car, and had to build one.

AN ITERATIVE PROCESS

The car has undergone several evolutions, both aesthetically and performance wise. Each stage contained mixed emotions of excitement, frustration and joy. The standard twin turbo setup was pushed to the limit almost right away. All the best bolt on parts available were thrown on to squeeze the most out of it.

It was pushing 240rwkw which was enough for a long enough time, but 4 years into ownership and the overhaual itch started to emerge again. To get the car performing the way it is now, Adam spent years researching and planning.

On a quest to achieve the response of a twin turbo setup, but with increased top end power and simplicity, Adam settled on a single turbo setup, running a BorgWarner EFR 7670 with a custom built super short manifold. This brought it to an insanely snappy 400hp.

Fast forward 4 years and the itch for more was scratched when he was offered to trial a new EFR 8474 .92 internal gate set up by the same pioneering company that built his initial set up. Despite the whole project requiring far more in supporting mods than anticipated and many frustrating setbacks, he persevered and pushed the car to it’s current 550hp standing.

“I ENJOY THE CAR AND DRIVE IT AS MUCH AS I CAN. IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE A SHOW CAR. IT WAS BUILT TO BE A STREET CAR THAT GETS ENJOYED ON A REGULAR BASIS.”

AERO AESTHETICS

Being a graphic designer by trade, getting the car aesthetically correct was just as important as performance for Adam.

Starting as a base, the popular FEED widebody kit was added to the chassis, “I think it works well on a black car as it helps the kit look homogenous”, Adam tells us.

From there, a SCOOT vented bonnet was added, but only after being shaved and moulded into one piece.

At the rear, Adam’s fitted carbon fibre goodies such as a Sanai Works rear diffuser and canards. Topping off the boot is a Shine Auto Project carbon ducktail.

The strive for the most ideal combination is evident by the fact that Adam’s been through four different front bumpers on this car alone.

It started with the standard S8 front, then moving onto the FEED, which Adam felt was eventually played out. From there he progressed to a Knightsports Type 8 bumper before final settling on the TCP Magic’s street version G-Face bumper. The TCP is the perfect mix of aggression and simplicity for an OEM+ look.

HIGHS AND LOWS

As most modifiers can attest to, there were countless setbacks and hurdles to overcome in the ten years of ownership.

Engine rebuilds and the fear of blowing a motor is almost synonymous with RX-7 ownership. One of the biggest issues for Adam came two years into ownership, when coolant and overheating issues started to arise.

The reality struck that an engine rebuild was inevebitable and that came in the realm of $8,000. Looking back in hindsight though, Adam notes that the new Rotormaster motor has been flawless and with 60,000kms now clocked on it, it’s never missed a heartbeat.

Speaking of his most recent setup with the single turbo, Adam states, “When it was all said and done, I jumped in the car and gave it it’s first wide open throttle hit with 550hp, all the stress was replaced with adrenaline and elation.”

THE MODS DON’T STOP

Whilst the car is a relatively practical setup, where it can be street driven, there’s always more on the cards.

Next steps include an overhaul on the interior; the FD will be treated to carbon trim with alcantara and a custom steering wheel.

The ultimate goal for Adam though is an N/A 26B, although the current state of the car has him fulfilled.

With lessons learnt, Adam advises those who are in the early stages of modifying, “If I’ve learned anything from modifying cars it’s patience, and how to deal with the stress and disappointment when things go wrong – and invariably, when cars are involved, something always goes wrong.”

A special thanks also goes out to his family including his parents and wife, plus friends and affiliates including Turblown, Michelin, Raceonly Garage, Adaptronic, Performance Exhaust Centre, Concept Garage and Bodyform.

“A FOUR ROTOR IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL. ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, I’LL MAKE IT HAPPEN. IN THE MEANTIME, I CAN’T SEE THIS CAR GOING ANYWHERE.”
