The Lexus Hoverboard Is Here

Following the unveiling of its hoverboard, Lexus has completed a full and final reveal of its new project including a successful testing phase in Barcelona.

The project, better known as SLIDE required re-engineering core technologies and uncovering technical innovations. The new hoverboard uses maglev technology with a combination of superconductors, magnets and liquid nitrogen.

The hoverboard has been constructed from an insulated core, which contains high temperature superconducting blocks. These are housed in cryostats (reservoirs of liquid nitrogen that cool the superconductors to -197°C). The board is then placed above a track containing permanent magnets. When the board is cooled to its operating temperature the track’s magnetic flux lines are ‘pinned’ into place, maintaining the hover height of the board.

As we mentioned in our previous article, Lexus’ hoverboard has been in testing for months. Its now been revealed that the past few months were allocated just for testing and transforming the maglev technology into a refined track and board.

The hoverboard itself features design cues we’ve come to expect from Lexus. This includes a balance of crafted details and modern materials. It uses the iconic Lexus spindle grille signature shape and uses materials found across the Lexus brand, including natural bamboo.

Mark Templin, Executive Vice President at Lexus International said: “Embarking on this project, we set out to push the boundaries of technology, design and innovation to make the impossible possible. With this project, we collaborated with partners who share our passion for creating enjoyment out of motion. Even through combining our technology and expertise, we discovered making a hoverboard isn’t an easy process. We’ve experienced the highs and lows and have overcome a few challenges, but through mutual determination we have created a demonstration of our philosophy in design and technology to create Amazing in Motion.”

For now, this project is of course a one off prototype, but the technology used could pave the way for a very different future. See more in the video below.
