Unless you’re a close personal friend of Jay Leno, witnessing millions of dollars worth of automotive heaven in one place won’t happen too often. But if you happen to live in Sydney, you’re guaranteed a strong showing when MotorEx comes to town.
Last weekend we went out to Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush to check out all that MotorEx had to offer. The quality of the show is second to none, with every car on display dripping with custom details.
There is truly something for everyone, regardless of your taste in cars and modifications. The event ran over Saturday and Sunday, with special guests, seminars and interviews running all weekend.
Prizes are awarded on Sunday for a wide range of categories. PSYCHO above took out bronze in the Champion Awards for Paintwork, and first place for Interior & Rear Compartment!
SUBLIME is a well known face on the show scene having won God of Auto Salon in Sydney last year and a bevy of other awards.
The unusual turbo 20B conversion is always a point of discussion, but with over 500kW at the wheels it speaks for itself.
Suicide doors always add impact whether they’re on a brand new sedan or a classic hotrod like this one.
Mick Fabar’s ’33 Ford Coupe won the international So-Cal Choice Award and the Best of Breed – Hot Rod award.
It also took out bronze for Engine & Components, silver for Overall Innovation and Interior & Rear Compartment, and gold for Impact & Display!
Everything from the world over, old to new is represented at MotorEx. The Mazda R-100 above was warmly received at this year’s show.
Custom Aussie classics like the ’72 Holden HQ above make up a big portion of MotorEx. The shaved look with billet wheels and super high quality trim is always popular amongst the Street Machine crowd.
This particular car belongs to Karen and Tom Keves, and took out the Champion Award top spot for Undercarriage & Driveline. It also received bronze for Overall Innovation.
Tim Bartrop’s ’73 Holden Monaro qualified for MotorEx at the Rockhampton Motorama in Queensland earlier this year.
Where else would you see a modern Japanese sports car on show next to a classic American hot rod?
Even modern hypercars had representation at MotorEx thanks to the crowd-stopping Koenigsegg above. At $2.2m worth, and one of only 15 in the world, this is not the kind of car you want to miss in the flesh.
Powering the CCX is a twin supercharged V8 making 610kW, and propelling the orange bullet to a top speed of 417km/h.
Queen St Customs is a name that carries a massive following. Known the world over for their epic gold-plated M3 drag car, they’ve now built an equally as impressive drag bike in the same style.
The sea of gloss black, carbon fibre and 23ct gold was an incredible sight for all eyes.

Cal Heyden is the proud owner of the yellow 1969 Ford Mustang above.
The Silver Bullet is one of Australia’s most awarded and best known street machines. It was sold by the original builders in December last year, and the new owner has since personalised it with a few unique touches while still preserving the heritage and overall presence of the car.
The team from Rocket industries were heavily involved with MotorEx, and made a big statement with their EFI fed, 528ci Hemi powered ‘King Kong Cuda’ Barracuda. How’s that for a name?
1950’s Cadillacs are in a class of their own. King Cad in the foreground had people gawking all weekend, as did ‘Marilyn’ in the background – a ’53 Caddy built by John D’Agostino as part of a trilogy commemorating Hollywood legends Clark Gable, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe.
The quality of displays at this years show took it to a new level. We love the commitment of some exhibitors to really eye-catching setups.
What you see above is Adam LeBrese’s ’78 XC Ford Coupe. If you didn’t see it in the flesh at MotorEx, get yourself a ticket to SEMA in Las Vegas, because that’s where it’s headed! Adam’s XC took out top overall honours at MotorEx, crowned Australia’s Most Impressive Custom Car on the weekend. As the winner, Adam picks up $15,000 worth of prizes, including transport to and from his spot on the floor at SEMA next year. To call it a massive prize would be an understatement.
The ’56 Ford F100 ute above was a star of MotorEx. Built by Wayne and Diane McLaughlin, it took out the aforementioned John D’Agostino Custom D’Elegence Award, Best of Breed – Street Machine Award, gold Champion Awards for Bodywork and Engine & Components, and silver Champion Awards for Paintwork and Undercarriage & Driveline! Not a bad effort for one weekend.
Club pride is everywhere at MotorEx. We were especially jealous of these sweet jackets.
MR HP is a ’72 HQ Monaro which also came down from Queensland for MotorEx. It was built by the owner and his old man over two and a half years in time for Summernats, then dismantled and improved for MotorEx.
The level of customisation inside these machines is hard to describe. Same goes for the attention to detail.
Looking almost out of place at MotorEx was the Hankook WRX time attack car. We are all eagerly anticipating this car’s presence at WTAC next weekend.
The day after these photos were taken, the WRX was spotted testing at Wakefield Park. It is sure to be a highlight of proceedings in Pro Class.
Outside the main halls was the Real Street display, full of street driven rides from the local Sydney area.
This Y32 Nissan Cima is one of the best VIP styled rides in Sydney. The history of the car is a great story, having been built up once, burnt out in a house fire and rebuilt into the masterpiece you see here.
LOE-200 is another regular at Sydney meets of all kinds.
Biggie’s 180SX has received a lot of attention in the last few months with a fresh motor build, new front wheel tubs and a total electrical overhaul.
You’ll be seeing more of this purpose built drift machine on T-LD very soon.
Here’s another VIP inspired ride known as FLEXUS. Airbags are the only way to get your LS400 this low on the street and remain mobile.
It wasn’t all daily drivers outside, though, with a handful of impressive hot rods getting involved.
EZE-10S built supercharger setup that does what it says on the tin.
MotorEx is probably the only time you’ll see a lead sled parked at the front of The Dome.
We could never get tired of watching these one-off creations rolling on normal streets.
Crowds were loving the showcase from start to finish, hailing it as the best yet!
Back inside, MotorEx attendees got the chance to see the first Rotiform demo car on Australian shores, and it didn’t disappoint. Rotiform NUE wheels sat perfectly on the demo VW.
