SNAPSHOT: BLACK FRIDAY R34 GT-R

Words: Jason Hanif & Ryan Lewis. Photo: Vyet Le.

Friday the 13th is a date darkened by sinister connotations. What car represents that menacing stigma better than this blacked out R34 GT-R? Apocalyptic on-road presence is the name of the game. Not hard with a giant rear wing, front splitter millimetres off the tarmac and a stable of mischievous mods under the bonnet. It’s the perfect candidate then, for our special Black Friday desktop wallpaper.

EVENT: SUMMERNATS CAR FESTIVAL 25

- Words: Ryan Lewis. Photos: MJ Digital.

Hands down, no other event has more Aussie motoring character in it than Summernats. For better or worse, it’s the most anticipated event by all Aussie horsepower fanatics. The Summernats Car Festival has been running for a quarter of a century, and every year delivers the loudest three-and-a-half day weekend of burnt rubber, race fuel and rock ‘n’ roll. Up to 1500 elite street machines descend on Canberra, followed by 85,000 adoring fans. People bask in tyre smoke clouds and the smell of bourbon for as far as the eye can see. Bet your bottom dollar that Summernats has everything to do with Australia’s passionate love of V8s and burnouts. Automotive tomfoolery is our business. We spent last weekend soaking up the wonder that is Summernats for the first time. It was unlike anything else we’ve experienced. No words will quite capture the spectacle in its entirety, so here’s our photographic guide to Australia’s number one horsepower party.

Looks can be deceiving. It’s not often you find a car on the street that truly defines the term sleeper. At first glance, this rather ordinary looking MKV Volkswagen Golf R32 could be just like all the others out on the road; but don’t be fooled. Anthony Mitchell’s twin-turbo R32 catapults from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds!

FEATURE: OXER’S TURBO AIR-RIDE CIVIC

- Words: Ryan Lewis. Photos: MJ Digital.

Daniel Oxer is an enigma. Prior to our encounter at the recent JDMYard Annual, all I could identify him by was his trolling online persona and red Civic sedan. Those outside the StanceWorks family may feel like they’re being kept at arms length, but that’s not the case. Once we got chatting, Dan’s passion for doing what he loves was obvious. A Honda boy through-and-through, the build of this Civic is unlike any you’ve heard before. Daniel says, “Don’t worry about the hype. I’m doing this for me.”

BUILD: STEVE KA’S 408KW R34 GT-R

- Words: Ryan Lewis. Photos: MJ Digital.

If by some strange circumstance I was faced with the choice between a well sorted R34 GT-R and a brand new R35 GT-R, I would honestly take the R34 every time. Call me crazy if you want, or nostalgic maybe, but as far as I’m concerned the R34 GT-R is the last of the great Skylines. While I’m certain the ’35 is equally as exhilarating, I doubt it measures up to the satisfaction of a gearbox with a clutch pedal, the legendary RB26DETT and the far less hyperactive electronics of the R34. There’s also no reason why a well-tuned R34 can’t give a stock R35 a serious run for its money.
